Still life in oil

Sophie paints still lifes in oil on panel, capturing the character of modest subjects and textures of daily life. She likes to elevate objects from the home, ranging from bars of soap to metal lids, fruit, and candy. Working small, but life-size, she creates a sense of intimacy and uniqueness. The rendering of different materials and a high degree of realism are central to her work, which is inspired by the Dutch Old Masters. She paints “alla prima” from life, painting on panel, and prefers working with a setup that puts her subjects in the spotlight, but maintaines a natural sense of light.
